More Millennials Move to D.C. Than Any Other U.S. City

Washington, D.C., is a top draw for young adults from around the country, according to new Census data.

More millennials – young adults between the ages of 25 and 34 – have been moving to Washington, D.C., over any other city in the country, according to the Huffington Post.

The Wall Street Journal's Neil Shah says that between 2010 and 2012 the metro Washington area – which includes suburbs in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia – saw an average annual net gain of 12,583 people in the millennial age bracket. That was the biggest gain in the country, according to the Brookings Institution’s analysis of Census data.

There are two reasons for the influx, says the Journal: Barack Obama’s presidency likely drew young people to the D.C. area, and the Washington economy is “knowledge-based” and thriving.
