Discussion: Do You Have Ideas on How to Protect the Streetcar Shelter From Vandals?

Vandalism at the old Catonsville Junction waiting shelter has become a bigger problem.

Someone has damaged the waiting shelter at the base of the No. 8 Streetcar Path off of Edmondson Avenue.

Maureen Sweeney Smith noticed the vandalism Saturday morning, which included damage to the benches inside the shelter and some missing shingles from the roof. The benches were actually torn from their supports on the wall on the inside of the shelter, built in 1939 for the streetcar routes. While there have been issues to the waiting shelter in the past, the recent vandalism was more serious.

"This group is actually hurting the structure of the building," Sweeney Smith said.

The property, which the Maryland Transit Administration leases to the Catonsville Rails to Trails group, sits behind Opie's Soft Serve and Snowballs shop and the 7-Eleven and is a popular hangout for teenagers.

Sweeney Smith said she filed a vandalism report with the Baltimore County Police Department, and officers will increase patrols around the area, but she is worried the shelter is vulnerable.

"I wish I had a good solution," she said.
