County Will Establish Bike Route between UMBC and MARC Station

The increased signage and road improvements are a pilot project.

Part of the long-term bicycling and pedestrian improvements for include a pilot project for designated bike route between and the MARC Station in Halethorpe.

The bike route would travel from Poplar Avenue to Carville Avenue one way from UMBC to the train station. From the train station back to UMBC, the route would follow Oregon Avenue to Birch Avenue and Locust Avenue.

Along the route, signs appear with a bicycle on them and the mileage to the next destination.

Kathy Schlabach, project manager for the western Baltimore County Pedestrian and Bicycle Access Plan, said this is the first pilot project for the county bike plan. The county has only designated signage for bike routes at a community's request, such as with , she said.

The designated route will also include bicycle storage areas at the MARC station and at UMBC at the end of the routes.

The eastern portion of the plan was completed in 2006. The western plan includes the southwestern portion of Baltimore County, through Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Hunt Valley and Timonium.

Residents praised the plan at the community meeting held last week at the in Oella.  The plan will be presented to the Baltimore County Planning Board and ultimately voted on by the Baltimore County Council.

Wouldn't it be less costly and safer for all to affix bike racks on the front of the UMBC shuttle busses, like the MTA does?
Tonya Coe Goodnow January 27, 2012 at 11:25 pm
It's be less costly to not pay for signs just to tell cyclists what they already know: There are roads in between UMBC and the MARC station and you can ride a bike on them.

What a great add to the community! Now to just get those sidewalks in from the library to Dolores Ave, as well as the crosswalks at the Middle School & Church! It's wonderful the safety of our cyclists are in mind, but so should the safety of our children and the ones that walk to and from school everyday!!

Ditto Tonya's comment... this isn't a just bike route its a car route. These aren't highways, just normal roads any biker can use right now. I can create 100 "bike" routes in a couple minutes between UMBC and the MARC. But I can't waste $50,000 like the government doing it.
