Beltway in Catonsville Area Re-opened Without Incident
SHA shut down both sides of Beltway in the area to remove sign, but everything opened back up on Saturday morning.
The Beltway re-opened Saturday morning after the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) shut down both directions the previous night to remove a sign structure that needed attention.
The affected area was between the US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) and the Edmondson Avenue exits, and SHA crews started shutting it down at 10 p.m. Detours were put in place for drivers so the sign could be removed.
After the work was done, the SHA was able to re-open the Beltway at around 7 a.m. That was about two hours later than hoped for, but it didn’t affect much.

“It didn’t affect much,” SHA spokesperson Charlie Gischlar said on Monday. “We had to close the Beltway. We had to detour traffic.”
A recent inspection found a problem with the sign that forced it to be taken down.

Gischlar said that was a testament to the work the SHA’s inspection teams did in this case. Since some of the notice in this situation came at the last minute, the SHA worked hard to get the word out about what was happening.
It used social media and the overhead message signs throughout the area to limit the surprise. Gischlar said that the SHA has information on Facebook and Twitter that people in the area can find if needed.
