Baltimore County Public Library: One of the Country's Best and Busiest

Baltimore County goes beyond the bookshelves with technology.

The Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL) system is one of the best and busiest library systems in the country. In 2012, BCPL:

  • checked out a whopping 10.7 million pieces of material
  • helped 5.5 million walk-in customers in its 19 branches and 4 bookmobiles
  • got more than 5 million hits on its website
  • provided computer access to over 1.1 million citizens
  • circulated more than 226,000 electronic books

And now, BCPL is about to kick it up a notch.

“Baltimore County residents will soon have reliable high-speed access to the digital world,” said Rob Stradling, director, Baltimore County Office of Information Technology (OIT), in his post in the BaltimoreCountyNow Patch blog.

Baltimore County plans to install a broadband fiber-optic network within the library system, beginning with the administrative offices and 10 branches.

Stradling worked with BCPL Director Jim Fish to improve service delivery, streamline workflows and reduce redundancies in the current system. Once implemented, their changes will save taxpayers more than $143,000.
