Some parents don’t realize how much their auto insurance premiums will increase when they turn the car keys over to a teen.

“Teenage driver premiums are at least double the cost of their adult counterparts,” he writes. “So if you currently pay $1,200 a year for your auto policy, be prepared to shell out an additional $2,400 or more when you add a teen driver to your policy.”

Jeff Greene offers some tips for managing the costs of insuring teen drivers in his latest blog. To keep the cost of car insurance down, Greene recommends that teen drivers:

  • Keep grades up (to earn a "good student" discount)
  • Maintain a safe driving record (no tickets or accidents)
  • Always wearing a seatbelt
  • Enroll in driver's education
  • Take an additional defensive driver training classes
  • Do not buy or drive a new car, which may result in a higher premium than an older car
  • Add a used vehicle to the policy for possible multi-car discount
