The Charlestown retirement community Employee Softball Team took 2nd Place in the Erickson Living Tournament held August 3 at Rockburn Branch Park in Elkridge, MD. The Charlestown team competed in the double elimination softball tournament against teams from Riderwood (Silver Spring), Oak Crest (Parkville, MD), Ann’s Choice (Warminster, PA), and Greenspring (Springfield, VA).
Charlestown played Riderwood in the first game and was losing 14-0 at the end of 4 innings. However, the Charlestown team didn’t give up as it scored 8 runs in the 5th inning. Nonetheless, it ended up losing to Riderwood by a score of 15-9.
Having lost the first game the tournament, the Charlestown team moved to the Loser’s Bracket, which meant it would have to win four straight games in order to make it to the Championship Game. One more loss would bring an end to Charlestown’s day.
In Game # 2, Charlestown defeated Greenspring by a score of 12-8, powered by a 7-run 6th inning. In Game # 3, Charlestown defeated Ann’s Choice by a score of 16-12, once again scoring 7 runs in the 6th inning. In Game # 4, Charlestown defeated Oak Crest by a score of 11-5, which set up a rematch with Riderwood, which was undefeated after playing three games. In Game # 5, Charlestown defeated Riderwood by a score of 11-7 and earned a spot in the Championship Game versus Riderwood (since both teams now had one loss each).
In the Championship Game, each team played hard despite being tired and having to play in the rain. Riderwood had a 7-5 lead going into the top of the 7th inning. Charlestown battled back to score 2 runs to tie the game, but Riderwood scored 1 run in the bottom of the 7th inning to win the game 8-7 and capture the championship.
Congratulations to the team from Riderwood. The staff and residents at Charlestown should be very proud of the Charlestown Employee Team for showing great teamwork and for not giving up despite the rain, injuries, and having to play six consecutive games in six and a half hours without having time to rest in between games. Special thanks to the residents, staff, and family members who came out to support the team.
