100 Kites to Fly Above Catonsville, MD, on Saturday, April 26

WHAT: A Saturday, April 26 (10 a.m. – Noon), intergenerational Catonsville, MD, Kite Flying Contest in which more than 100 students from area schools – inclusive of Catonsville High School, Our Lady of Victory, Riverview, and Lansdowne – the public, and Charlestown retirement community residents and their families will fly original kites they designed and built. The contest will be held on the field in front of Our Lady of the Angels Chapel on the 110-acre Charlestown campus.

The contest will be kicked-off when Catonsville Rotary Club President Bill Lorenz attempts to fly his “snowboarder” kite that has a 15-foot wingspan and a 53-square-foot sail area. Lorenz will use dual control bars and three strings to try to fly the kite, which dragged him across the ground and lifted him 2 feet in the air when he did a trial flight at Charlestown earlier this month.

Contest prizes will be offered for Most Patriotic Kite, Most Creative Kite and Highest Flying Kite. This event has a “Patriotic” theme. In the past two weeks the public sent photos of their favorite kites and of kite flying that were posted on Charlestown retirement community’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Charlestown-Retirement-Community/260033280808747 ) as a way of celebrating everyone who will participate in the kite flying contest.
