The Way of the Cross: A Lenten Study
While the cross is universally associated with Christianity, the meaning of the cross varies greatly, for both Christians and non-Christians. The New Testament does not speak with one voice regarding Jesus’ crucifixion and the nature of atonement. The Church has confessed multiple meanings over the centuries. And questions remain:
- Why a cross – a Roman Imperial method of execution?
- Was the cross a sacrificial offering to God? If so, why?
- How can suffering of any kind, even God’s, be redemptive?
- How exactly does the crucifixion of Jesus result in the salvation of humanity?
- Couldn’t God have arranged a less violent way of offering forgiveness?
- What, then, does the cross mean for us today?
This ambitious Lenten study will take us through 2,000 years of history and theology and engage in contemporary psychological, anthropological, and theological approaches to the cross. Led by Dr. Ken Kovacs.
