‘Bittersweet:’ Longtime Toy Store in Downtown Ellicott City is Closing

The owners announced their departure Wednesday.

Mumbles and Squeaks Toy Shoppe, an Ellicott City Main Street toy store for more than two decades, is closing its doors. Co-owners Ed Williams, 66, and Frank DiPietro, 52, announced the closing on Facebook on Wednesday, saying that after 21 years at 8133 Main St., Ellicott City, they will be moving to Florida. In an interview, Williams said they will be going into “semi-retirement” upon the store’s closing. The store’s last day is June 1. “Twenty-one years is enough,” Williams said. “It’s a hard business. … September, we start working right after Labor Day and work seven days a week until Christmas. The only day we get off is Thanksgiving. The risk you take is phenomenal.” He also said online competition, which doesn’t have to charge sales …

Man Charged with Stealing Candy, Breaking into Club

Craig Nathaniel Webster of Catonsville was charged Sunday in burglaries of two businesses on US Rte. 40.

Baltimore County police arrested a man Sunday, charging him in burglaries of two Catonsville businesses. At 3:40 a.m., Craig Nathaniel Webster allegedly broke into Patient First at 6333 US Route 40, and allegedly stole candy, according to a Baltimore County police report from the Wilkens precinct. He allegedly broke a rear window to get in, and he was caught after another burglary nearby, the report states. In another burglary, he allgedly broke glass doors at Forty West Racquet Club, 6421 US Route 40, and tried to pry open a safe, according to another report. Webster, "was apprehended outside location," it states. He is a resident of the unit block of Baldwin Court in Catonsville, according to court records. He's been charged with three …

Stormwater Fee Increases for Residents, Decreases for Nonprofits

The Baltimore County Coucil gives nonprofits a 48 percent discount that will be offset by residential property owners.

UPDATED (8:54 p.m.)—Nonprofits in Baltimore County will pay a lower stormwater management fee courtesy of residential property owners. The Baltimore County Council Monday approved new stormwater management fees by a vote of 5-2. Councilmen  Todd Huff and David Marks voted against the amended bill. One of the main amendments adopted by the council reduced the fees that will be charged to nonprofits. Under the proposal submitted by County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, nonprofits would have paid $36 dollars for every 2,000 square-feet of impervious surface. The council amended the bill to reduce that fee to $20—a 48 percent discount. To offset the reduction, the council voted to increase residential fees by $3. Under the newly approved bill, …
