In men’s soccer, junior forward Pete Caringi (Calvert Hall) smashed career highs with three goals and two assists as the Retrievers exploded for five goals in a 5-1 victory over Boston University in front of 1,444 fans during Homecoming Festivities at Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday.

UMBC (6-4-4, 1-2-1) earned a huge America East Conference victory after three prior disappointing results. The Terriers saw their four-game unbeaten streak snapped and they slid to 4-6-4, 1-1-2.

The five goals were the most that UMBC has scored since the opening game of the 2010 season in a 5-3 victory over VMI and tied the team record for goals in an America East game.

“It was phenomenal,” head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. said of the outburst. “We have had a lot of chances, but today, we finished those chances.”

Freshman midfielder Michael Burgos scored his first two collegiate goals, scoring first and last for the Retrievers.

Caringi’s eight-point performance was UMBC’s first since Ted Lawler scored four goals vs. UMES in 1995. UMBC’s last five-goal effort in league play occurred vs. Albany in 2009.

On the women’s side, freshman forward Bria Bass blasted home her third goal of the season in Sunday afternoon’s America East women’s soccer matchup, but a second-half penalty kick by Stony Brook led to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at the Retriever Soccer Park. The tie marked the Retrievers’ fifth draw of the season, a program record.

UMBC (1-9-5) continues to fight for its place in the America East Championship, moving to 0-3-3 in conference play.

In volleyball, sophomore Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) and junior Emily Vandegrift  each recorded double-digit kills and junior Ali Goc  scooped up a team-best 16 digs, as the UMBC volleyball team swept Stony Brook 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-19), Sunday afternoon at the RAC Arena.

In addition to her team-high 11 kills, Schmidt picked up 12 digs for her third straight and eighth overall double-double of the season.  The Retrievers evened their America East record at 3-3 overall and moved into fourth place in the conference standings.

UMBC returns to the court on Friday when the squad hosts America East rival Binghamton at the RAC for its Dig Pink contest. Donations to Retrievers’ Dig Pink campaign will be accepted on the Side-Out Foundation’s website. Action between the Retrievers and Bearcats is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The Retrievers had a strong showing in cross country on Saturday. Junior Brandan McGee returned to early season form, pacing the men’s squad for the first time since mid-September while classmate Cody Mezebish  continued her strong season by once again leading the women as the UMBC cross country teams competed at the Princeton Invitational, Saturday morning at West Windsor Field. The men’s team finished fifth in a field of 24 as the women placed 19th overall.

Mc Gee completed the 8K course in a school-record time of 24:46 to finish 16th overall in the championship race.

In the first official meet of the season, the UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each defeated Rider, but the women lost to James Madison, Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. The Retriever men defeated the Broncs, 171-114, and the women won 167-117, but lost to the Dukes 175-124.

Seniors Pierre De Waal and Mohamed Hussein each won three individual events to pace the men, while Klara Pavelkova claimed victory twice for the women.
