The UMBC men's soccer team suffered a tough loss to the defending national champion North Carolina Sunday in second round of the NCAA Men's College Cup.

After upsetting Old Dominion on the road Thursday night, beating that team on penalty kicks after they played to a scoreless tie through two overtimes, UMBC went to North Carolina and played just as well.

The Retrievers battled the Tar Heels to a scoreless tie through two overtimes before North Carolina edged them in penalty kicks, 3-2.

This is the second time in three years that UMBC made the NCAA tournament. The Retrievers did it in 2010, upsetting Princeton on the road in the first round before losing in the second, also in penalty kicks, to William & Mary.

UMBC finished this season with an 11-4-7 record.
