Traffic Light Coming to Edmondson Avenue and Beltway

The light was installed by contractors several weeks ago and won't be operational for at least another month.

As more drivers may be detouring around the Frederick Road bridge in Catonsville to avoid construction, state contractors have added one upgrade to a neighboring road to respond to the additional car volume.

A traffic light has been installed at the Edmondson Avenue exit at Interstate 695 by contractors with State Highway Administration. The light appeared roughly two weeks ago but is still covered up.

The light has been installed prior to the entrance ramp to the Baltimore Beltway at Edmondson Avenue adjacent to the Royal Farms.

While SHA officials told Patch that the light would not be operational for at least another month, the installation is tied to construction on the bridge.

The $20 million project, which is expected to be completed in 2013, included other improvements to the roads surrounding the bridge such as a new median on Interstate 695 and new pavement on Interstate 695.

More information on the project, including maps and a timeline, are available on the SHA project page.

This is long over due. I also wish they would put one in at S Rolling and Newburg.

The light is being put in because they will soon be closing the exit from Frederick to the outer loop of the Beltway. Traffic will be detoured to the inner loop to exit onto Edmondson to get to the outer loop of the Beltway.

I don't quite understand the light set-up though. There are lights for traffic on Edmondson but none for the Beltway exit traffic. There's also no light at all at the outer loop exit, so that should be interesting; I don't like that exit now and it's risky to prsume that those who have a right turn signal on are actually turning right onto the Beltway ramp and you can proceed.

Good luck to the Royal Farms patrons. That parking lot is a Royal Mess now; God help them getting out during this detour and the added traffic..

Mari, yes, I agree the current location is a little confusing for the traffic pattern. I'm waiting on clarification from SHA on how the intersection will work.
