State Confirms Second West Nile Virus Death
State health officials report a total of 25 cases this year, all in adults.
State health officials are reporting the second death related to West Nile Virus in Maryland.
Because of privacy laws, there is no additional information about the unidentified adult.
Officials with the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene report that 25 cases of the virus have been confirmed in Maryland in 13 counties. All of the cases involve adults, according to a statement released by the department.
This is the second death in Maryland in two weeks attributed to the mosquito-borne disease.
Baltimore County Officials began a spraying program in neighborhoods on the west side of the county last week. A second round of spraying is scheduled for Sept. 13.
Health officials offer the following tips to limit exposure to the disease:
- Avoid areas of high mosquito activity
- Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
- Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and hats when concerned about mosquito exposure
- Use an EPA-registered insect repellent according to package directions
Residents are also asked to monitor their yards for standing water and areas that can breed mosquitoes.
- Clean rain gutters to allow water to flow freely
- Remove old tires or drill drainage holes in tires used as playground equipment
- Turn over wading pools, wheelbarrows, wagons and carts when not in use. Flush water from bottom of plant holders twice a week
- Replace water in birdbaths at least twice a week
- Turn garbage can lids upside down and make sure trash receptacles are empty of water
- Fix dripping faucets
- Aerate ornamental pools and water gardens or stock with fish and use a circulating filter system

If this were you with the west nile virus, you would not be so glib!!!

Not glib at all. Realistic. Your chances of contracting WNV are slim to none. Not so with the flu. Go out to the m,all or store or around people and your chances increase dramatically.
More people around you are carriers of the flu virus than skeeters with the WNV .

Joe, you wouldn't be so insensitive if it was your loved one or friend that died from the WNV.

The reason they don't give out the person's name is because West Nile Virus is a hoax.

No, it's because it is illegal to release their medical information.

Oh yeah, that too.
Well, it's still a hoax. It's just another way to re-allocate funds from taxpayers' wallets and into government budgets and chemical and pharmaceutical company bottom lines.

Steve, when I tested positive for WNV in the 90s, I truly believed I had the flu. Thankfully, none of the more serious symptoms developed, but WNV is very real. Believing it's a hoax is very sad, as I'm sure it is devastating for those who have lost loved ones to it.

What bothers me is the bombing of our community with "chemicals that prevent west nile virus" (killing mosquitos), saying "it's totally safe" but "stay inside" ... It's totally safe but stay inside? Hmm. How about a vaccine instead? That way, people who believe in pumping themselves full of vaccines can do that instead of toxifying the entire town with chemicals, which frankly probably pose more of a threat than wnv.
