Newt Gingrich Wins in South Carolina
What does Gingrich's win in the South Carolina primary mean for the GOP in Maryland and elsewhere?
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told an audience in South Carolina Saturday night that "the genius of America ... is that you can come from any background" and be successful in having an impact on the country.
"It is very humbling and very sobering to have so many people who so deeply want their country to get back on the right track," Gingrich said. "So many people ... feel that the elites in Washington and New York have no understanding, no care ... no reliability and, in fact, do not represent them at all."
Referring to the news media, he said, "The American people feel that they have elites who have been trying for a half century for force us to quit being American."
Gingrich was declared the winner of the South Carolina Republican primary, besting Mitt Romney, who has been the declared frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum.
To chants of "U.S.A!," "U.S.A!," "U.S.A!," Gingrich predicted he will be the nominee and he challenged President Obama to seven three-hour debates.

If you want a real change in politics there is only one candidate amongst them all that offers that change, Ron Paul. Do not kid yourself, there is no difference between Obama, Gingrich, Romney, and Santorum. All three have sold the American people out. It is time for a REAL CHANGE! Vote Ron Paul, a Patriot not a politician!

watch this election get really ugly...and even more divisive. If Romney were the candidate, I don't think it would be as bad. This country needs more moderate elected officials...it is gridlock because of the lack of compromise and no vision... Newt has so much legal and especially moral baggage, it puzzles me why his candidacy appeals to so many religious groups......do they dislike Romney that bad that a morally corrupt person is more appealing??? I just don't get it...

I like Newt. He is a man with vision. He articulated a 10 point Contract with America in 1994 and kept the contract - no lies (Obama). If you listen to him, he is articulating vision for America. Consevative Christians should not make his divorces the issue. He led America to a great prosperity era in the 90"s as Speaker of the House, even with a Democrat President. We need someone who can do it again. He is proven. We don't have that in Obama or the other candidates.

As Speaker of the House, one is automatically a leader. You make not like his leadership, but be clear, Newt is a leader. Your emotions are leading you to call Newt a bitter book writer. He wrote books, but be clear, you just don't like his ideas. And finally, the "90 members of the Tea Party" got elected on ideas. Be clear, Obama could have followed Clinton's pattern who worked with the opposing fairly elected party, and is today a Democrat icon. But instead, Obama stands in opposition to the people's choice of better ideas. He and his ideas need to go. The people who elected Barack Hussein Obama failed to realize he had NO negotiating experience at all, ever. Governors of states (Clinton)(Bush)(Reagan)(Carter) learned this skill. Speaker of the House, while working with a President of the opposite party, learned this skill.

Why is this article posted on the Ellicott City Patch? Obviously, this is not a local news story.

We're all about local content on Patch, and in the case of national breaking news, we often feel that having local residents weigh in makes the content 'local.' We don't routinely post national news unless it's very timely and it would be a service to our readers. This article was posted within minutes of Gingrich winning, so we wanted to share that service with our readers (whom we hope were relaxing over the weekend while we kept up with the news). Thanks for asking!

While it's compelling to watch the Republican nominating process play out in 3-5 states, what about if everyone in all 50 states contributed and could select a candidate? Americans Elect will allow every registered voter the opportunity to nominate a candidate from a third ticket through its on-line voting process. Americans Elect has been working for the last year to gain access for a third ticket on every ballot in all 50 states. Consider "Picking A President, Not a Party" and check out Americans Elect at Americanselect.com

There's something about an obese rich man complaining about people who get food stamps to keep their children from starving; who tries to claim the high moral ground when he himself was forced to resign from Congress for ethics violations; who paints the horrors of "Washington Insiders" while raking in MILLIONS as one of them himself; who smugly yawps on about family values while cheating on his terminall ill wife while she wastes from cancer. Newt is a world class hypocrite.

To even have Newt Gingrich as a potential presidential candidate speaks volumes of how corrupt and unethical US politics has become. Newt was once removed from his position of Speaker of the House and fined $300,000 due to ethics violations. No matter your political affiliation, the only choice for a President with tried and proven Integrity and a solid track record of upholding the Constitution of the United States of America is Ron Paul.

That huge element of bipartisan cooperation instead of what is going on these days is what will make a president effective. Some of the rules have to be changed--like filibuster rules...campaign contributions...super pacs...these are the issues that will make or break ANY president...and is one of the reasons people think President Obama has not kept his promises. Instead of grasping the reality of what he inherited and by his diplomacy here and abroad...it is just so easy to ignore and take a "party" line. No, he is not perfect...and yet he has been steady in his job and in a second term will have more leverage and tools to get things done--will not have to campaign..and will be able to bring out the arm twisting that needs to happen. As voters, we are the ones who should be insisting on compromise instead of the pointless gridlock...here we are trying to show the world how well Democracy works--I think they are laughing at us for our intrangience.

Obama campaigned on "change" to get elected in 2008. Once in office he played business as usual politics just like Bush before him. The national debt did however change by increases of $1 trillion in FY2008, $1.9 trillion in FY2009, and $1.7 trillion in FY2010. Now As of January 9, 2012 the gross national debt is a astounding $15.23 Trillion! The USA can not afford another 4 years of Obama. Sadly Gingrich, Romney, and Santorum will not offer any real change either as proven by their flip flopping voting records. The USA needs a president with Integrity that says what he means and has a solid voting record to prove it. That man is Ron Paul.

You have got to be kiddin'--Trump is as fake as his hair... And somewhere along the line there has GOT to be some real awareness of the price of two wars-TWO- an almost unheard of event in US history.....They were "unfunded" and anyone with any sense of monetary awareness had to be asking "how are these going to be paid for"? It does not serve the comfort level well, or the stock market, to make real pointed issues of some of these things...but common sense will make you wonder how all those guns and ammo were paid for...oh...I forgot...HALIBURTON!--gees, I wonder just who at the national level might have had some imput into that...hmmmm There is so much stink over the covert escapades of guns for loyalty, (am I among the minority who remembers Ollie North and the implications of his deeds?) etc., it can really make one wonder what in the world has happened to a good idea....DEMOCRACY

Trump would do better than any of the current candidates against Obama though... The apathetic would perk up, pay attention and many more would vote.... no question about it. I also believe that he would do a better job of managing the country than all of the other candidates combined. I really don't like the guy but he would succeed as the President.
