Yes, this is bad reporting again, especially for a ‘local’ news outlet. Worse yet, the accompanying map is west of the area being reported on, and South West Area Park isn’t even on it. TMZ may be more credible.

Mike and Al, the Baltimore County Fire Department identified the neighborhood as Halethorpe. If that's incorrect it's not on Patch. I regret the error about the map. That is my fault. The reporter asked for assistance and I mangled the address.

Adam, if the zip code of the scene is the only consideration, than yes your article is factual, but the readers of the various neighborhood Patches are expecting that neighborhood locations be defined less broadly since the Patch claims to be a neighborhood news source. Where broad naming becomes more concerning is when crime is reported on and the name “Halethorpe” continually gets plastered across the headline. Halethorpe eventually gets an undeserved bad rap. Halethorpe is actually a small neighborhood that experiences relatively less crime than a lot of the other neighborhoods sharing the same zip code. The post office for the 21227 zip code happens to be located in the small neighborhood of Halethorpe, so therefore the much larger area that is served by this post office get the label of “Halethorpe” on nationwide sites such as Google Maps. Our Co. fire house serving this broad area is also named “Halethorpe”, so I can see how the BCoFD would report it as Halethorpe, but as a news outlet you should set your standards higher than that.
This whole explanation was given to the former Arbutus Patch reporter, Bruce Goldfarb, and he was eager to learn the dozen different subdivisions in his coverage area. His delineation gave the Arbutus Patch much more intimacy and credibility as a local newspaper. The Sunpaper is just as guilty as the same reporting. Many locals would be happy to go over this explanation again. Thanks for responding.

Adam, they report it as Halethorpe because the 21228 post office is located in Halethorpe. The fire clearly not in Halethorpe despite what your sources say. Halethorpe is located outside of the Beltway. Southwesth Area Park is located in Baltimore Highlands. Unlike the Pope, Baltimore County Fire Department is not infallible. Simply repeating information that is obviously wrong in not journalism. I was under the assumption that facts mattered. Isn't that your job, to verify facts? Or are you just a stenographer?

I meant 21227. The point being that this isn't a matter of opinion, a "he said/she said" situation, but a verifiable fact. Mr. Bendar, given that several members of the community have attempted to help correctly identify the location of this incident, I am puzzled by your response. Are you saying that the Baltimore County Fire Department is correct and we are wrong, or that identifying the correct location doesn't matter, or that you just don't care?
