A Guide to Catonsville Area Pools

With summer here, it's time to start thinking about where to go swimming.

Summer's here and families are looking for ways to stay cool. Thinking about joining a swim club? We've done the research for you. Here is a list of local pools in the area and what they have to offer:

Five Oaks Swim Club

Hours: Monday through Thursday 10:30 a.m. - 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10:30 am - 9:30 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Amenities: High dive, two low dives, sliding board, beach entry, snack bar, playground
Price: $750 bond, $600 yearly dues
Swim lessons: Yes for members
Parties: Yes for members
Costs: $25 pavillion fee/guest is $4 per person
Membership details: $50 application fee
What's the waiting list: 2-3 years
Best things about this pool: This well-known Catonsville pool is considered one of the biggest pools in area and only one that has a high dive. They have two pavillions to rent. Plus, they have a playground equipped with showers the kids can soak themselves.

Price: $715.00 bond, $585.00 yearly dues
Swim lessons: Yes, members only. Members can sign up for morning or evening classes during one of three sessions that run throughout the summer.

Costs: half pavilion $25 full pavilion $50. Guest costs: M-F $5 for adults $4 kids, weekends and holidays $6 adults/$5 kids, half-price admission after 5 pm any day
Membership details: You must be sponsored by someone in order to get on the waiting list
What's the waiting list: about a year
Best things about this pool: This other popular Catonsville pool is tucked back in a community setting so you get a quiet community feel. Plus, it has a sizeable playground.
Note: Kids must be fully potty trained in order to go into the main pool.

Best things about this pool: There's no waiting list. It's friendly, family oriented, and best of all, it's not crowded.

Parties: Yes. Parties are booked for Saturdays or Sundays from 4 to 6 pm with swim time from 4 to 5 and use of multi-purpose room from 5 until 6.
Membership details: anyone may join
What's the waiting list: none
Best things about this pool: Anyone may join and you don't have to be a member to sign up for swimming lessons.

Best things about this pool: It's non-vested member price is one of the lowest in the area. Plus, it's family oriented and offers many social activities for kids, teens and families.


Wynnewood Recreation Center Pool

Amenities: snack bar, diving well, kiddie pool, picnic area, volley ball court, basketball court, ping pong, horseshoes, built in corn hole, jungle gym for kids, 2 small springboards
Price: There are two kinds of membership: Supporting and Associate. Supporting Membership - $500 bond/$350 per year & Associate Membership is $475 per year. In addition to the the yearly dues, an I.D. badge must be purchased for each person in a Membership Family.  The cost of the badges are $2.50 each.
Swim lessons: Members only, free
Parties: Members may invite up to 20 guests. There are also pavilions available for rent.
Costs: Price per guest: $7 weekdays/ $8 weekends & holidays. Rental costs for building - Saturday $125 for 12-8 pm Weekday $75 for 4-8 pm
Membership details: Members must own their own home and resided inside a boundary area (it extends up to Frederick Road)
What's the waiting list: currently none
Best things about this pool: It's the only pool in Arbutus, plus, it offers free swimming lessons for members. Other bonuses: it has a welcoming membership and community oriented feel.
Note: If you rent your home or live outside the boundary area, you won't be able to join.

Hunting Hills Swim Club

Costs: $500 annual membership, $500 one time bond, $150 one time capital improvement assessment, $50 one time initiation fee, $35 application fee
Membership details: There is a non-vested summer-only membership available for people who are interested in trying out the pool before they become vested members.
Swim lessons: Yes, both members and non members.
Parties: Yes
What's the waiting list: none
Best things about this pool: It's not crowded. It's quiet, family oriented and they host many events throughout the summer. And the board is made up of only pool members, no outside services are brought in.
Notes: They offer advance guest passes that are active the day after you buy them.


UMBC Aquatic Complex

Price: $99 per person for the summer
Amenities: Two pools. Outdoor pool—50 meter 8-lane Olympic size pool that goes from 6 to 6.5 feet. Indoor pool—25 meter 8-lane pool (4 to 5 feet deep) with separate diving well (10-13 feet deep). Plus access to weight room/fitness equipment
What's the waiting list: none
Swim lessons: $80/session (8 lessons for $10 each). There's also a club team that caters to ages six and up and a diving club for kids.
Best things about this pool: This facility has some of the most water space in Maryland. They also have some of the most affordable swimming lessons available. Plus they offer summer swimming camps.
Note: This pools caters to UMBC faculty, staff and students but also caters to the community as well.
